Learn the Ways in Which Business Networking Can Beef Up Your ...

Good business networking is all about focusing your attention on networking with all of the right people and growing a good sized list of contacts. All of the steps that you take toward expanding your business network are going to help you get as much as possible from your effort because the kind of progress you make is going to depend upon the way that you partner with other people and businesses. This article will teach you a few things that you need to know to make sure that you are going to take a good approach to your business networking so that you can get as much a return on your investment as possible.

Cast a Wide Net: Perhaps the biggest mistake you can make in business networking is prejudging others and avoid networking with them. Don?t make this mistake because there is no way to tell which people can help you and how they will help you or how many referrals they will send in your direction. While targeting is great in marketing it can be detrimental in business networking so don?t take the targeting too far. In other words, your net should be casting as wide as you possibly can and network with as many people out there so that you can see how many benefits can be derived from them.

Work as a Perfectionist: When you?ve amassed lots of great contacts on hand you can?t let yourself slack off even a tiny bit because this will cost you quite a lot. You need to polish your personal appearance, totally refine your business profiles and as well as craft your communication, so that the impression that you make is a good enough. Nobody is totally perfect but keeping your best foot forward will really help you get long term success.

Network with Networkers: Business networking means you get to expand your circle with people who are new and whom you do not already know. Many people that you come across won?t feel inclined to share their network with you, which is okay. Don?t put in too much time trying to get to their network, just move on. It saves a lot of time and makes it easier to grow your own network when you network with other networkers. Sure it is going to take some time before you are truly able to reach out to these people but the time and work you put into it will be well worth the effort when you start to see the returns you get for your effort. The type of business you want to run online isn?t important, what is important is that you reach the success you desire and that involves your understanding how important it is to strike up joint ventures, create top level contacts and get to know and/or partner with the other major players in your niche. There?s just so much more that you?ll be able to get from your web business if you put in the effort it takes to regularly network and get to know people who can help you both grow and then expand your reach.

File Bankruptcy To Get Rid Of Car Loan? | Bankrate.com

Justin HarelikDear Bankruptcy Adviser,
I had a vehicle loan with my ex-husband, and both names were listed on the car. When we were together, we could afford the "large" payment, but I cannot afford it on my own now. He filed bankruptcy and listed the vehicle, so he is no longer responsible for the car. I am now filing bankruptcy as well because I can't afford the loan payments. I also bought a "buy here, pay here" car that I could afford. Can I get in trouble when I try to list the car we had in bankruptcy since I have another vehicle with a small loan that I'm not putting in bankruptcy? The difference is $4,000 owed on the car I want to keep and $24,000 on the one I want to include in the bankruptcy. I am just really nervous and have never done anything like this. Help!
-- Anne

Dear Anne,
This sounds like a wise decision to me. You are going to reduce your financial burden quite a bit by relieving yourself of that huge car note. Smart move. Let's hope the new car is reliable, and you will be able to keep it for a while.

The vast majority of people file bankruptcy because of three major life events: divorce, unemployment or illness. In your case, you are now a single mother, and you decided that having a luxury car was not a prudent decision with your current financial situation. Rather than try to keep paying on a car that likely was worth a lot less than what you owed, you got something more affordable.

I suggest you surrender the more expensive vehicle prior to filing your case. Try to get the lender to pick it up right away so that you aren't dealing with two vehicles. The lender will take the car back, sell it and send you a bill for any balance remaining after selling the vehicle. You will still be able to wipe out that remaining balance, called a deficiency balance, in your bankruptcy case.

In the event you still have the vehicle after filing your case, please make sure you are current on your car insurance payment. Nothing could be worse than getting into an accident in that car after you file bankruptcy, only to learn your insurance lapsed. That post-filing liability could be your responsibility after the bankruptcy is over.

Crystal Cathedral considers relocating to nearby Catholic church

The new Crystal Cathedral
The new Crystal Cathedral

The following comes from a May 18 story in the Christian Post Reporter.

Crystal Cathedral?s newly minted president said Wednesday that the ministry behind the ?Hour of Power? might be moving to a Catholic church in their Orange County neighborhood, although probably not for another year and a half.

John Charles, president and CEO of the ministry, reportedly said in a meeting of the congregants and the church board that St. Callistus Catholic Church in Garden Grove was the only option the bankrupt ministry could consider moving to when it comes time to relocate, as its campus was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in February.

Following the famous ministry?s bankruptcy filing in Oct. 2010 and subsequent sale, the congregation was given three years from when the escrow closed to find a new venue.
Although not as impressive in looks as the glass building that Crystal Cathedral was famous for, St. Callistus lies only two blocks from the ministry?s current home, which it currently leases from the Roman Catholic diocese.

Salas makes seeds wary in upset run to tennis quarterfinals ...

WATERVILLE, Maine ? The end admittedly was abrupt for Isaac Salas.

But his road to the quarterfinals of the state high school singles tennis tournament was one rarely traveled.

Salas, a freshman from Camden and the Waynflete School in Portland, upended two seeded players to reach the final eight of the 48-player draw before being eliminated Saturday by second-seeded Justin Brogan of Falmouth at the Alfond-Wales Tennis Facility on the campus of Colby College.

?I knew I had to play big shots and I tried,? said Salas of his straight-set loss to Brogan. ?But he just hit everything back.?

Brogan will play third-seeded Matt Gilman of Cape Elizabeth in one boys semifinal Monday, with the other semifinal matching top-seeded Patrick Ordway ? the defending champion ? against No. 5 Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.

Monday?s girls semifinals will include three players from Falmouth High School and top-seeded Maisie Silverman, a sophomore from Brunswick who reached last year?s final. Silverman will face fifth-seeded freshman Olivia Leavitt in one matchup, while No. 2 Annie Criscione will play No. 3 Analise Kump in a clash of Falmouth seniors.

Longtime tournament official Don Atkinson couldn?t remember the last time an unseeded player defeated two seeds to reach the quarterfinals, but Salas found himself in that position after upending No. 7 Jordan Doutreluigne of Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32 late Friday and No. 10 Jesse Butler of Deering of Portland 6-3, 6-1 in his Round of 16 match earlier Saturday.

Salas and Doutreluigne, an exchange student from Belgium, were familiar opponents, having met last fall at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport.

?Whenever we played at MRC we always had really close matches, so I kind of knew what I needed to do,? said Salas. ?I needed to stay consistent, and I played well and he played well.?

Salas had similar success with Butler, a player he had lost to in a match last summer. After a relatively tight first set, Salas ? normally a baseline player ? became more aggressive as the match progressed.

?Mostly I just stayed consistent, tried to keep it deep and waited for a short ball to come in,? said Salas. ?I started to come in more in the second set.?

Salas, who plays third singles for Waynflete, which has won the last four Class B boys state team championships, was no match for Brogan, a sophomore who took Ordway to three sets in last year?s final before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Brogan, who has lost just two games in his three tournament matches to date this year, swept to a 6-0, 6-0 victory that left Salas disappointed for the moment but ultimately not so low about his effort in reaching the quarters as a first-year high school player.

?I had a good tournament,? he said.

As expected, Ordway had little difficulty Saturday, as the junior dispatched No. 9 Satchel McCarthy of Cape Elizabeth 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals after a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jai Aslam of Messalonskee of Oakland.

Friedland, also a junior, scored the only boys quarterfinal upset, defeating No. 4 Tyler Adams of Bonny Eagle of Standish 6-3, 6-3 after ousting No. 12 Patrick Stewart of Bangor 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 16.

Gilman, another junior, scored a 6-2, 6-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 11 Sam Leeman of Morse of Bath after Leeman had fought off a late-match cramping episode to outlast No. 6 Tyler Small of Ellsworth 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 in the previous round.

The seeds also largely held on the girls side, with competition Saturday including just one three-set match, a Round of 16 marathon in which No. 8 Colleen O?Donnell of Waterville rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the final set to edge No. 9 Ashley Woodside of Hampden Academy 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

?I?ve played a lot of players and none have ever hit as consistently as [O?Donnell] did,? said Woodside.

O?Donnell subsequently fell to Silverman 7-5, 6-1 in the quarters.

Leavitt lost just one game in her two matches Saturday, first defeating Wendy Goldman of Hall-Dale of Farmingdale 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 16 before topping co-No. 12 seed Emma Blakeley of Camden Hills of Rockport 6-1, 6-0. Blakeley was coming off one of the bigger early round upsets of the tourney, having defeated No. 4 Mea Clark of Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16.

Kump defeated Hannah Potter of Yarmouth 6-1, 6-0 in her quarterfinal, while Criscione ? who like Kump lost in last year?s semifinals ? defeated No. 10 Shashanna Moll of Belfast 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters.

Moll, a junior who reached the Round of 16 last spring before being ousted by Silverman, advanced one additional round Saturday by defeating No. 7 Devri Ramsey of McAuley of Portland 6-3, 6-2 before squaring off against Criscione.

?I think I played how I usually play today,? said Moll after her Round of 16 victory. ?It definitely was a good day for me. I thought I kept my errors to a minimum, which is the hardest part of the game for me, keeping the errors out of my game.?

General Election 2012: Obama Faces Electoral College Challenges in South and Midwest

President Barack ObamaPresident Barack Obama faces new warning signs in a once-promising Southern state and typically Democratic-voting Midwestern states roughly five months before the election even as he benefits nationally from encouraging economic news.

Obama?s new worries about North Carolina and Wisconsin offer opportunities for Republican Mitt Romney, who must peel off states Obama won in 2008 if he?s to cobble together the 270 electoral votes needed to oust the incumbent in November.

Iowa, which kicked off the campaign in January, is now expected to be tight to the finish, while New Mexico, thought early to be pivotal, seems to be drifting into Democratic territory.

If the election were today, Obama would likely win 247 electoral votes to Romney?s 206, according to an Associated Press analysis of polls, ad spending and key developments in states, along with interviews with more than a dozen Republican and Democratic strategists both inside and outside of the two campaigns.

Seven states, offering a combined 85 electoral votes, are viewed as too close to give either candidate a meaningful advantage: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia.

?As of today, the advantage still lies with the president, but there is a long and hard road ahead in this election,? said Tad Devine, who was a top strategist to Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and John Kerry but isn?t directly involved in this year?s race.

If Romney wins all the states Republican John McCain carried in 2008 plus North Carolina, as trends today suggest he would, he would still need 64 electoral votes to hit the magic number. That would require him to win a majority of the states that are up for grabs.

Obama, on the other hand, faces the costly and labor-intensive challenge of defending those states in a much different environment than the one he enjoyed four years ago.

Big-spending, pro-Romney political committees are certain to be a factor, and already are running heavy levels of television ads in states where Obama is vulnerable, such as Florida.

But Obama?s early spending ? more than $30 million on advertising before Memorial Day ? and new glimmers of economic hope across the battleground states demonstrate the size of Romney?s challenge.

The race is expected to be close, and the past six weeks have been volatile.

North Carolina is a case in point.

Obama announced his support for gay marriage on May 9, one day after 60 percent of North Carolina voters approved a constitutional ban. ?That issue definitely hurts him down there,? said veteran Republican presidential campaign strategist Charlie Black, a top aide to 2008 nominee McCain. Black?s not directly involved in this year?s race but is an informal adviser to Romney.

North Carolina?s high African American and young voter population, keys to Obama?s 2008 wins there, give him the edge, aides say. And the president so far has spent heavily there, $2.7 million on television, according to reports provided to the AP.

But Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue gave Republicans an opening by not seeking re-election this year. And union leaders, a key Democratic constituency, are upset that this summer?s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., is being held in a state where union rights are weak.

In Wisconsin, embattled Republican Gov. Scott Walker?s improving fortunes as a contentious June 5 recall election approaches could alter that state?s landscape. Walker, who sparked mass protests by signing anti-union legislation last year, has pulled narrowly ahead of Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in recent polls.

If Walker survives, Romney aides say they have a real chance to carry Wisconsin, which no Republican has done since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

?I don?t think there?s been any better dress rehearsal for a presidential election than what?s going on in Wisconsin right now,? said Rich Beeson, political director for the former Massachusetts governor.

Indeed, the Wisconsin recall could signal a GOP shift in an arc of states from Iowa to Pennsylvania that have reliably voted Democratic in presidential elections for a generation.

?Whether Walker wins or doesn?t is going to be a big indicator of how Wisconsin goes, and how the whole upper Midwest goes,? said Iowa?s Republican Gov. Terry Branstad.

Romney has signaled plans to contest Iowa, where Obama?s 2008 caucus win propelled him to the Democratic nomination. Romney also sees opportunity in his native Michigan, where Democratic presidential candidates have won since 1988.

Bright spots are developing for Obama, too.

Public polls this month showed the president narrowly ahead in Virginia, a Southern state Republicans had carried nine times before Obama won it in 2008. Obama?s advantage among Latino voters is moving New Mexico his way. Neither campaign nor the super PACs have advertised there, despite close finishes in 2000 and 2004.

Obama also has seized on new economic data that could give him a lift across the contested map. April unemployment ticked downward in all of the up-for-grabs states except Colorado as Obama and Romney have fought over who is best equipped to lead an economic recovery.

In Des Moines, Iowa, this month, Romney blamed Obama?s spending for the recovery?s slow pace. A week later, on the other side of town, Obama said Romney?s career as a private equity executive was more suited for the boardroom than the Oval Office.

Obama?s attack dovetails with scathing ads on Romney?s career at the head of Bain Capital, which ran briefly in Colorado, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Virginia. They remained on the air last week in Ohio, where Obama aides say Romney?s opposition to the auto industry bailout in 2009 hurts him with workers in the region?s auto manufacturing sector.

Obama has had an edge in getting out his message. For nearly two months, his campaign has aired spots across 11 states, heaviest in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, according to the ad-tracking reports.

Romney has only been airing ads for two weeks in four states. But super PACs that support him have helped shave Obama?s advertising edge, airing $10 million in ads across 10 states.

Obama aides point to an edge in state-by-state organizing that could be the deciding factor in a close election. While Romney is quickly arranging with the Republican National Committee to deploy staff to various battlegrounds, Obama?s campaign has been up and running for years.

Said Democratic strategist Devine: ?The president and his campaign have a real and potentially decisive advantage on the ground.?
