OC Transpo Canada Day Service - July 1, 2012

This Canada Day, avoid the headache of traffic and parking in the downtown core by taking public transit.?

A special holiday schedule will be in effect on Canada Day.
Extra service will be added throughout the day and late at night to many routes and the O-Train.
Seniors who show their ticket to the Mayor?s Breakfast at Lansdowne Park can ride OC Transpo free all day on July 1.

Kathy Hochul, Bill Owens To Skip Democratic National Convention

The list of House Democrats skipping the Democratic National Convention this September is growing.

New York Democratic Reps. Bill Owens and Kathy Hochul said Wednesday they will not attend the convention in Charlotte, N.C., the Daily reports. The news comes on the heels of similar announcements this week from three West Virginia Democratic leaders and Rep. Mark Critz (D-Pa.).

Both Owens and Hochul, who represent parts of upstate New York and are up for reelection this year, blamed their absence on obligations within their state rather than reluctance to support President Barack Obama.

"I guarantee that my time will be better spent meeting the farmers, small business owners and other people who put me here," Hochul told the Daily. A spokesman for Owens said the congressman has a "packed schedule back home".

Hochul was recently attacked by her Republican opponent, Chris Collins, over her support for the president. Owens has yet to state his support for Obama.

Cabot buying Norit for $1.1 billion

BOSTON (AP) ? Chemical and specialty products maker Cabot Corp. is buying Norit NV for $1.1 billion in order to strengthen its specialty chemicals portfolio.

Norit, which is based in the Netherlands, specializes in activated carbon products, which are used in environmental protection, air and water purification, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and catalysts. It has 10 manufacturing plants located throughout Europe and the Americas and 760 employees.

Boston-based Cabot is buying Norit from affiliates of Doughty Hanson & Co. Managers Ltd. and Euroland Investments BV.

"This acquisition supports the ongoing transformation of our portfolio to a higher margin, less cyclical, specialty chemicals focused company," Cabot President and CEO Patrick Prevost said in a statement.

Norit will continue to be led by CEO Ronald Thompson.

The acquisition is expected to add 20 cents to 25 cents per share to fiscal 2013 earnings and 30 cents to 40 cents per share in fiscal 2014. The estimates exclude one-time costs.

The deal is expected to close this year. It requires the approval of U.S. and German regulators and consultation with the Dutch labor council.

Cabot said Thursday that it expects to fund the deal with about $200 million in cash and $300 million of borrowings under a credit agreement. It also plans to issue about $600 million of long-term debt.

Cabot shares closed at $37.97 on Wednesday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $22.45 to $44.97.

Microsoft expected to announce Windows Phone revamp on Wednesday

Published: 09:00 PM EST (06:00 PM PST) Riding a wave of momentum generated by the Surface tablet unveiling on Monday, Microsoft will be outlining plans for Windows Phone 8 on Wednesday as part of the company's push to take on Apple and Google in the mobile market.

The Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant is slated to discuss the next-generation Windows Phone 8 at a two-day long developer summit in San Francisco, with anticipated topics ranging from multi-core mobile CPU support to tighter device integration across the Windows environment.

Unlike Monday's Surface tablet event which was teased late last week, the upcoming developers conference was announced a month ago and Microsoft has been relatively tight-lipped about what to expect, reports CNET. It is clear that the company will be focusing on its mobile OS as the invitations sent to press outlets were from Microsoft's Windows Phone unit and depicts a mobile device sporting a Golden Gate Bridge background image.

Rumors surrounding the event point to the announcement of Windows Phone 8, the next-gen mobile operating system that is widely speculated to support multi-core processors. This would be a step up from the current single-core units like the Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs used in handsets like Nokia's Lumia series. Because developers play a key role in writing the multi-threading code necessary to deploy software in multi-core devices, the topic will likely be broached during the summit.

While the basic UI of Windows Phone 8 will be much the same as the current Windows Phone 7, Ina Fried of All Things D points out that the core operating system kernels will be totally different. She notes that Windows Phone 7 is based on the legacy Windows CE platform Microsoft stripped down to battle Palm when smartphones were in their infancy, while the as-yet-unannounced Windows Phone 8 will likely be built on the Windows NT core that has been at the heart of every desktop iteration of the OS since Windows XP. Further extending the NT kernel's reach is Windows 8, the OS that will power next-generation tablets like Microsoft's own Surface, but desktops, laptops and the new Ultrabook specification as well.

Fried makes an astute point in saying that developers won't have much of a problem porting their software to a variety of devices running Windows 8, though this raises the question as to whether the OS can be pared down enough to run smoothly on respective hardware. Software written for Windows Phone 7 should have no problem running on Windows Phone 8 as Microsoft didn't allow developers to write code directly to the kernel and instead forced them to use Silverlight and XNA.

With Windows 8 Microsoft will have an operating system that will underpin a set of devices that runs the hardware gamut but it remains to be seen whether it will be a true one-OS ecosystem that is both stable and non-fragmented. This is the type of tight system integration that Apple is moving toward with iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion albeit in a more indirect way with discrete mobile and desktop operating systems.

Also rumored to make an appearance at the event tomorrow is near field communication (NFC) hardware support similar to Android's Google Wallet service. Apple has expressed interest in NFC with hirings and patents though it is unknown if the iPhone maker plans to include the technology into future version of its popular handset.

As the exact feature set of the next-generation Windows Phone awaits official announcement, some analysts predict that sales of the Microsoft-powered wireless devices will outpace those of the iPhone by 2016. The most current figures showed a 0.4 percent drop for smartphones running Windows Phone 7 during the month of April, though an expected fall 2012 launch for the Windows 8 ecosystem could drum up demand.

Here?s an example:

A few years ago I am invited to speak for the Annual Convention of the Professional Speakers Association of Europe.

Since I am already known there, I resolve to develop brand new strategies to reveal in my program.

I conceive a title: ?What They Don?t Teach You at Speaking Business School.? So far-so good. Now where do I get this new material.

Please don?t laugh when I tell you: I ask the universe for it. That?s right. I ask the universe for it.

(C?mon, Burt, now you?re pulling my leg.)

I use the powers you are about to discover. Universal intelligence delivers to me 10 new strategies, business-building strategies for aspiring speakers.

These strategies reach me intuitively while I?m doing other things during the next day or two. I write them down at once. (Ya gotta do this. Why? Because these ideas are like smoke rings. They disperse and are lost in the next few seconds.)

1.Now you wonder how you can do this too . . . as often as you like. To get more gigs. To enhance your life. So I?ll tell you.

Caveat: This only works if you believe it works. As Henry Ford said: ?Think you can; Think you can?t: Either way you?re right.?

2. You do not ?make? this work. It is effortless. You surrender into it. You allow it to work. Most people have no idea of the higher powers of the human mind. You tap your higher powers through your subconscious mind.

3. Your subconscious mind is a portal to universal intelligence. From universal intelligence you can retrieve anything you need/want to know. Here is all you have to do:

Step One:

For a start, pretend. Make it a game. Surrender disbelief for a few moments.

Sit in a straight-back chair. Sit quietly, your back straight and not rigid, your two feet flat on the floor, a pad and pen in your lap . . . and your eyes closed.

Breathe slowly. Relax deeply. Feel each part of your body doing the breathing; Sense your breath in your chest. Sense your breath in your abdomen. Notice your bodily sensations.

Sense your breath in your hips. Sense your breath in your thighs. Notice your bodily sensations. Sense your breath in your left foot. Etc., etc., etc. Any part of your body will do. Sense your breath anywhere you like. It is fascinating what attunement does to your bodily sensations.

You are slowing your brain waves, changing your consciousness to the alpha state. This is a way used for thousands of years by sages, shamans, savants, gurus, scholars, luminaries, masters, mandarins, adepts, etc. since pre-history.

I did not make this up. I discovered it.

Now, ask for what you want to know. Breathe into the parts of your body as I direct. Let your breath become slower, more relaxed.

Step Two:

Wait. Observe your breathing. Relax. Insights begin to pop up from your subconscious mind. Let your eyes stay half-open (Stay in the alpha state.) Write each insight as it comes to you. Like smoke rings these ideas disperse in seconds. And writing crystallizes your thoughts.

Close your eyes in-between your note-taking. This is a classic method to access wisdom from the universe. You magnetize wisdom, insights and information from the universe to you.

Do this as often as you desire fresh ideas. Do this to attract wisdom from universal intelligence. If you believe this works for you, it works for you. If you believe this does not work for you, then it does not work for you.

It is an allowing process. With patience and practice it works better and better for you.

Step Three:

Take relentless actions. Create the best program of your life up to now. Let nothing deter you until you actualize your intentions. I do this all the time. It is how this piece is being written right now.

Spesifikasi iPad Vs Tablet Microsoft Surface

KOMPAS.com ? Microsoft baru saja mengumumkan kehadiran tablet Windows 8 buatannya sendiri, yaitu Surface Tablet. Tablet ini memang disebut-sebut akan menandingi tablet Android ataupun tablet Apple iPad.

Beberapa fitur unggulan tablet Microsoft Surface pun mulai dikedepankan. Mulai dari penyangga (kickstand), keragaman kapasitas simpan, pilihan prosesor, hingga aksesori yang lebih lengkap, seperti USB 3.0 dan pena digital ink.

Satu hal unik lagi adalah pilihan cover yang bernama Touch and Type. Nama itu bukan sekadar nama karena cover Surface Tablet bisa digunakan sebagai keyboard dan touchpad.

US Olympic horses travel to London in style

LONDON (AP) ? They didn't have to absolutely, positively get them there overnight, but when the U.S. Equestrian Federation sent some of its horses to London for the Olympics, it was a special delivery.

The elite U.S. three-day eventing equine squad landed in London on Monday on a FedEx flight, having taken the red eye from Newark, N.J. They're not the first competitors to arrive as the countdown to the games clicks to less than 40 days away, but they are among the most pampered.

"They are all special," said Tim Dutta, who owns the international horse transport company that organized the trip. "We are working on everybody's dream."

Bringing these elite athletes across the Atlantic Ocean is a logistical feat ? one small example of the many people and efforts under way behind the scenes to make the games go off without a hitch. This is particularly true for horses ? the only animals that take part in the games, which start July 27 and end Aug. 12.

Let's just start by saying that these 10 are not just any old group of horses. These animals have passports that would be the envy of any human wishing to travel the world. That said, they get used to traveling, and most of the time, they don't ask for much ? not even an in-flight meal.

But grooms traveling with Twizzel, Mighty Nice, Arthur and the other seven horses that made the journey would maybe give them a bit of hay.

Horses like these can move in their boxes quite a bit, unlike human sardines on regular flights. But in case any of them gets bothered by the noise, the grooms might stuff some cotton in their ears, says Dr. Brendan Furlong, the veterinarian for the American eventing team.

Carrots are always a good way to calm any horse who gets nervous ? or even a horse tranquilizer in the rare case a prized animal gets really edgy. The goal is to get them to London stress-free.

As for the grooms, the vet, and the other humans that cater to these pampered prancers, well, they aren't exactly going first class. Furlong says he'll usually ask the pilots to keep the plane kind of cool, so sometimes this crowd finds itself wrapped in blankets to keep warm. There's no in-flight movie, so jokes about whether they choose between "Seabiscuit" or "War Horse" don't really cut it.

"It's not a job for the faint of heart," Furlong said. "You need to have someone who is a very confident flier and who can intervene quickly to calm a stressed horse."

After all, 1,200 pounds (544 kilograms) of stressed horse can be an intimidating prospect.

Furlong says the crews are usually very accommodating ? and always want to come back even briefly to see their precious cargo.

But even these horses didn't escape Britain's strict rules on quarantine. Furlong arranged to have a farm near Newark International Airport set up as a special quarantine area to comply with the U.K.'s rules ? though admittedly the cherished 10 only needed five hours of intense scrutiny to meet the criteria. Nothing but the best for this crowd. Really.

But do they know ? do the horses know that it's the Olympics? That it's a special event that happens only every four years?

Dutta swears they do.

"They're athletes," Dutta said of horses that jump big big fences and run oh so fast. "They love what they do."

AP Exclusive: Feds: Design led to nuke plant woes

CAPISTRANO BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? After months of investigation, federal regulators have determined that design flaws appear to be the cause of excessive wear in tubing that carries radioactive water through California's troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant, a top federal regulator said.

The twin-reactor plant between Los Angeles and San Diego has been idle since January, after a tube break in one of four, massive steam generators released traces of radiation. A team of federal investigators was dispatched to the plant in March after the discovery that some tubes were so badly corroded that they could fail and possibly release radiation, a stunning finding inside the virtually new equipment.

Missteps in fabrication or installation were considered as possible sources of the rapid tube decay but "it looks primarily we are pointed toward the design" of the heavily modified generators, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regional Administrator Elmo Collins told The Associated Press in an interview Sunday.

Collins didn't rule out that one or more of the generators, installed in a $670 million overhaul in 2009 and 2010, might have to be replaced.

Eight tubes failed during earlier pressure tests in the Unit 3 reactor and "we have not seen that in the industry before," Collins said.

"It's these four steam generators that either have, or are susceptible to, this type of problem," Collins said, referring to the unusual damage caused when alloy tubes vibrate and rattle against each other or brackets that hold them in place.

So far, a fix has remained elusive.

"It's not too hard to frame up the problem," he added. "The answers are very difficult, or they already would have emerged."

The disclosure will rivet new attention on a series of alterations to the equipment design, including the decision to add 400 tubes to each generator and installing V-shaped supports that were intended to minimize tube wear and vibration.

It's possible operator Southern California Edison could face penalties stemming from the federal investigation, Collins said.

The generators were designed to meet a federal test to qualify as "in-kind," or essentially identical, replacements for the original generators, which would allow them to be installed without prior approval from federal regulators.

The environmental group Friends of the Earth has claimed Edison misled the NRC about the changes that it has identified as the likely culprit in excessive tube wear. The federal agency previously disputed that charge, but Collins said that's under review as part of the investigation. The group on Monday filed a petition asking the NRC to keep the plant offline until the company amends its license to reflect the design changes.

Inside the guts of the machinery, the original steam generators and the replacements "look substantially different," Collins added.

The NRC is scheduled to discuss its findings Monday evening at a meeting near the plant.

Collins said safety would remain the first consideration at San Onofre. About 7.4 million Californians live within 50 miles of San Onofre, which can power 1.4 million homes.

"These are significant technical issues. They are not resolved yet," Collins said.

Edison did not immediately comment on the NRC findings.

The company said in a statement the Unit 2 reactor likely would remain offline at least through August, pending NRC approval for a restart. It did not project a restart date for Unit 3, where tube damage has been more severe. The company is expected to submit a plan to the NRC later this summer to restart one, or both, reactors, which would have to outline how the company can control the tube damage.

"We know that the outage and the tube wear issue have generated concern in our community," Edison president Ron Litzinger said.

Cracked and corroded generator tubing has vexed the nation's nuclear industry for years.

Decaying generator tubes helped push San Onofre's Unit 1 reactor into retirement in 1992, even though it was designed to run until 2004. The following year, the Trojan nuclear plant, near Portland, Ore., was shuttered because of microscopic cracks in steam generator tubes, cutting years off its expected lifespan. Westinghouse Electric Corp. weathered a legal battle with five utilities in the 1990s that wanted the company to replace steam generators it manufactured for the Beaver Valley nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania after tubing corroded.

But the troubled San Onofre generators, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, might be a unique case because of the extensive modifications. Only one other U.S. nuclear plant uses Mitsubishi generators, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, about 20 miles north of Omaha, but its generators are smaller than those at San Onofre and have not displayed excessive tube decay, federal officials say.

The cause of the unusual wear has been eagerly anticipated, as Edison prepares to submit a proposal to the NRC to restart one or both of the reactors. The company has suggested the reactors would run for a test period under reduced power to reduce vibration.

"The phenomenon that we think causes this tube-to-tube interaction is definitely proportional to the power," Collins said. "At least in some theoretical sense, that might be part of the answer."

The company has announced that 510 tubes have been plugged, or retired from use, in the Unit 2 reactor, and 807 tubes in its sister, Unit 3. Each of the generators has nearly 10,000 tubes, and the number retired is well within the limit allowed to continue operation.

What's at issue is why so many tubes degraded so quickly, when the design changes were intended to improve the plant's performance and longevity.

The steam generators ? two in each reactor ? function something like a car radiator, which controls heat in the vehicle's engine. The generator tubes circulate hot, radioactive water from the reactors, which then heats non-radioactive water surrounding them. That makes steam, which is used to turn turbines to make electricity.

The tubes have to be thin enough to transfer heat, but thick enough to hold up under heavy pressure. They represent a critical safety barrier ? if a tube breaks, there is the potential that radioactivity can escape into the atmosphere. Also, serious leaks can drain protective cooling water from a reactor.

The trouble began to unfold in January, when the Unit 3 reactor was shut down as a precaution after a tube break. Traces of radiation escaped at the time, but officials said there was no danger to workers or neighbors. Unit 2 had been taken offline earlier that month for maintenance, but investigators later found unexpected wear in tubes in both units.

The NRC has said there is no timetable to restart the reactors.

Edison has been facing pressure from some nearby communities and anti-nuclear activists that have raised safety concerns, while the company looks for a solution to the tube problem and a path to restarting the plant, an important source of power in Southern California. The design of the generators is also under congressional scrutiny.

The plant is owned by SCE, San Diego Gas & Electric and the city of Riverside. The Unit 1 reactor operated from 1968 to 1992, when it was shut down and dismantled.

Egypt tenses for new president after vote

CAIRO (Reuters) - A second day of voting on Sunday will deliver Egypt's first freely elected president, though the country faces renewed tension whether he is a former general from the old guard or an Islamist from the long-suppressed Muslim Brotherhood.

Egyptians must decide between Ahmed Shafik, the last prime minister of Hosni Mubarak, or Mohamed Morsy, a U.S.-educated engineer who spent time in Mubarak's jails and offers Egypt a new start as an Islamic democracy.

"We have to vote because these elections are historic," said Amr Omar, voting in Cairo, who said he was a revolutionary youth activist. "I will vote for Morsy... Even if it means electing the hypocritical Islamists, we must break the vicious cycle of Mubarak's police state."

A gunfight killed two in Cairo overnight, according to local media. The reports blamed a dispute between street vendors and there was no apparent connection to the vote, which saw little trouble on Saturday despite mutual accusations of fraud. Observers reported only minor and scattered breaches.

It was impossible to forecast who will emerge the winner by Monday - and whoever it is may face anger and accusations of foul play. Both men have widespread support, but many voters may be staying away, disillusioned by a choice of extremes after centrist candidates were knocked out in the first round last month.

Turnout at polling stations in several areas seemed lower on Saturday than during the first round. Polls re-opened at 8 a.m. on Sunday (02.00 a.m. EDT).

"I am on my way to vote and I'll spoil my ballot. I'll cross out both Morsy and Shafik because neither deserve to be president," said 40-year-old shop owner Saleh Ashour in Cairo.

The military rulers who pushed out their brother officer Mubarak 16 months ago to appease the street protests of the Arab Spring have already enraged their veteran adversaries in the Brotherhood late last week by dissolving the new parliament, elected only five months ago with a sweeping Islamist majority.

A win for Shafik, 70, who says he has learned the lessons of the revolt and offers security, prosperity and religious tolerance, may prompt Islamist claims of Mubarak-style vote-rigging and street protests by the disillusioned urban youths who made Cairo's Tahrir Square their battleground last year.

"The Egyptian people have chosen freedom and are practicing democracy," Morsy said as he cast his vote on Saturday. "The Egyptian people will not back down and I will lead them, God willing, towards stability and retribution."

Shafik, a former fighter pilot and air force chief whose second finish to Morsy in the first round capped a rapid ascent from rank outsider status, made little comment as he voted.

UNEVEN OUTCOMES

Should Morsy prevail, benefiting from a movement forged by decades of clandestine struggle and from support among those who put aside qualms about Islamic rule to block a return of the old regime, he may be frustrated by an uncooperative military elite, for all the generals' pledges to cede power by July 1.

The Brotherhood on Saturday again denounced the dissolution, based on a ruling by the Mubarak-era constitutional court, as "a coup against the whole democratic process" and insisted only a popular referendum could reverse the parliamentary election.

But though overturning that vote drew comparison with events that triggered the bloody Algerian civil war 20 years ago, the Brotherhood, which hung back in the early days of the 2011 revolution, has shown little appetite for a violent showdown with Egypt's U.S.-equipped army, the biggest in the Arab world.

That stalemate, coupled with a failure this year of legislators to form a consensus body to draft a new constitution and a consequent lack of clarity over the powers the new head of state will have, leaves Egyptians, Western allies and investors perplexed by the prospect of yet more of the uncertainty that has ravaged the economy and seen sporadic flare-ups in violence.

Should Shafik win, his supporters reckon, he and the ruling military council which took sovereign powers when Mubarak quit would work in harmony to restore confidence, notably for the vital and ravaged tourist trade - but questions would remain over how far the Islamists and other opponents would resist.

Casting his vote on Saturday in the New Cairo district of the capital, businessman Ashraf Rashwan, 45, said hostility to the Brotherhood among the generals, who retain power and vast business interests, meant Morsy simply could not govern.

"They'll get no cooperation from the establishment. If Morsy wins, there will be a struggle that Egyptians - me at any rate - aren't ready for," he said. "Shafik will mean smooth transition. He's learned from Mubarak's failure to listen to the people."

One mid-ranking army officer, speaking privately, said he agreed with assessments that the military council would offer far more power to a President Shafik than a President Morsy:

"There will be different treatment depending on who wins. With Shafik, a firm crackdown is sure to happen," he said, noting a decree passed last week which restored powers to the military police to arrest civilians - a measure which replaced a hated emergency law that had lapsed the previous month.

"With Morsy, the establishment itself will not back him and there will be chaos and lax security, all of which will pose challenges to him and could destroy his presidency," he added.

"DEEP STATE"

In 60 years since army officers toppled the colonial-era monarchy, Egypt's armed forces have built up massive wealth and commercial interests across industries, helped since the 1970s by a close U.S. alliance which followed the decision of the most populous Arab state to make peace with Israel.

Commonly referred to as the "deep state", it is these shadowy structures, currently overseen in public by the ad hoc Supreme Council of the Armed Forces under Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, which many Egyptians see maintaining influence long after the promised handover to an elected civilian by July 1.

"There is no doubt that the state in all its institutions - judicial, military, interior, foreign and financial - back Shafik for president and are working to that end," said Hassan Nafaa, a politics professor who campaigned against Mubarak.

"It is very difficult to eradicate this spirit of Mubarak."

Only if liberals swallowed their qualms and voted for Morsy to prevent Shafik winning, Nafaa said, "only then may the 'deep state' back down - but I doubt this will happen."

Washington, paymaster of the Egyptian military, and the European Union, a major aid donor, both expressed alarm at the move against parliament and urged the generals to honor their pledge to stand aside. But, like neighboring Israel, both are also uneasy at the rise of the Brotherhood and have looked on anxiously as Islamists have closed in on power in other new democracies of the Arab Spring, notably in Tunisia and Libya.

With both halves of this couple in Toronto for tonight's MuchMusic Video Awards, Bieber reportedly rented the vehicle yesterday and took Selena to Stratford, Ontario, home to North America's largest classical repertory theater.

The insider describes the trip by Bieber and Gomez as "a relaxing and romantic break from work" and said each was very "excited" by the unique means of transportation.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - James Loney scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Matt Thornton in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 7-6 on Friday night in the opener of an interleague series between division leaders.

Alex Rios hit his second homer of the game in the top half of the eighth, but the Dodgers went in front again in the bottom half.

Loney started the winning rally with a one-out single against Thornton (2-4). Dee Gordon walked and Elian Herrera grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners at the corners. Bobby Abreu batted for Ronald Belisario (2-0) and Gordon took off for second as Thornton's first pitch to Abreu bounced past A.J. Pierzynski.

Belisario pitched 1 1-3 innings for the victory and Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 14 chances.

Chris Sale, trying to win his sixth straight start, took an AL-leading 2.05 ERA into his marquee matchup against reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. But Chicago's 23-year-old left-hander didn't get out of the sixth inning as the Dodgers rallied against Sale and Jesse Crain for five runs, giving them a 6-5 lead.

Ivan De Jesus hit for Kershaw during the big rally and singled home a run to trim Chicago's lead to 5-3 after an RBI double by Juan Uribe. Gordon came up after De Jesus and bunted a line drive that tipped off the glove of first baseman Paul Konerko. But second baseman Gordon Beckham, heading toward first to cover on the botched sacrifice, was right there to catch it.

At that point, rookie manager Robin Ventura replaced Sale with Crain, who gave up a tying two-run double by Herrera and an RBI single by Juan Rivera that gave the Dodgers their first lead. But Rios erased that advantage when he belted a leadoff drive in the eighth.

Sale was charged with five runs, seven hits and a season-high four walks in 5 2-3 innings after allowing no more than three runs in any of his 11 previous major league starts. Kershaw was charged with five runs - four earned - and eight hits over six innings with seven strikeouts.

Adam Dunn gave the White Sox a 2-0 lead in the first, driving an 0-2 pitch to right for his major league-leading 23rd homer and fourth of his career against Kershaw. The 12-year veteran, who averaged more than 40 home runs during a seven-year span before hitting just 11 last year in his first season in the AL, has connected in each of his last five starts.

The Dodgers also scored in the first when Gordon walked and came all the way around on Herrera's double. Herrera advanced on Pierzynski's sixth passed ball of the season, but was stranded when A.J. Ellis grounded out.

The third inning began a string of three consecutive innings in which the White Sox scored one run. Konerko hit an RBI single, Alexei Ramirez scored on a throwing error by Gordon after he charged Orlando Hudson's infield hit to shortstop, and Rios added his seventh homer to make it 5-2.

NOTES: Dunn has homered seven times in 74 at-at-bats against lefties, compared to none last season in 94 at-bats. ... Sale, who spent his two previous big league seasons as a reliever, batted in a regular-season game for the first time and had two strikeouts along with a sacrifice bunt. ... Mont. authorities say hitchhiker shot himself

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? A West Virginia man who claimed to be a victim of a drive-by shooting along a rural Montana highway while working on a memoir called "Kindness in America" has confessed to shooting himself, authorities said Friday.

Ray Dolin, 39, of Julian, W. Va., made the acknowledgement Thursday night, said Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier. Authorities believe Dolin, who is recovering at a Miles City hospital, shot himself as a desperate act of self-promotion but offered no further details.

The case remains under investigation and charges against Dolin are possible. None have yet been filed, said Undersheriff Vernon Buerkle.

Dolin claimed he was hitchhiking along U.S. Highway 2 west of Glasgow on Saturday when the driver of a maroon pickup pulled to a stop and shot him in the upper arm with no provocation.

Authorities later arrested Lloyd Christopher Danielson III, 52, and charged him with felony assault. That charge was dropped Thursday, although Danielson remained in custody for allegedly being under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he was pulled over.

Dolin runs a photography business called OneShot Impressions, which has as its logo the cross-hairs of a rifle scope.

He could not be reached for comment Friday. But he said in a Thursday interview prior to his alleged confession that he recently had taken a bus from West Virginia to Sidney and then began traveling across the state working on his memoir about people's kindness.

Asked about the release of Danielson, Dolin said then that he was reluctant to comment because of the ongoing investigation.

But he talked at length about his planned photographic memoir, offering several supposed instances in which strangers had gone out of their way to help him along his journey. And he repeated the claim made to authorities that he was shot as he was stopped on the side of the road preparing a meal.

Dolin told The Associated Press that no words were exchanged and that he never got a good look at the perpetrator.

"He came up, pulls up at a normal speed, stops, points, shoots and drives off. ... I did not get a good description," Dolin said.

The woman who stopped to help Dolin said Friday that she had no suspicions at the time that he might be responsible for his own wound. Sherry Alveson, of Malta, said she stopped after her daughter saw Dolin waving his jacket on the side of the road trying to flag down passing vehicles.

"He had blood down his arms, all over his clothes and he was bleeding and shivering and shaky," Alveson said of her initial encounter with Dolin. "I wasn't going to leave him sitting there."

Alveson said she only became suspicious after reading in Friday's paper that Danielson had been released. She said that made her wonder if the shooter was still at large or if Dolin shot himself.

But she said it wouldn't have changed her decision to stop along the highway last weekend.

"Whether it was self-inflicted or somebody else did it, he needed help," Alveson said.

Authorities arrested Danielson ? a Tumwater, Wash., man apparently in the region to work in the Bakken oil fields ? about 100 miles from the scene of the shooting based on a match between his vehicle and a description offered by Dolin. He was freed after his vehicle was examined under a search warrant, Meier said, although no further details have been offered.
