Wife's Garbled Text a Sign of Stroke

Sending garbled texts may be a sign of stroke. Image credit: Stone/Getty Images.

Smartphone autocorrect is famous for scrambling messages into unintelligible gibberish but when one man received this garbled text from his 11-week-pregnant wife, it alarmed him:

?every where thinging days nighing,? her text read. ?Some is where!?

Though that may sound like every text you?ve ever received, the woman?s husband knew her autocorrect was turned off. Fearing some medical issue, he made sure his 25-year-old wife went immediately to the emergency room.

When she got there, doctors noted that she was disoriented,?couldn?t?use her right arm and leg properly and had some difficulty speaking. A magnetic resonance imaging scan ? MRI ? revealed that part of the woman?s brain wasn?t getting enough blood. The diagnosis was stroke.

Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. A short hospital stay and some low-dose blood thinners took care of the symptoms and the rest of her pregnancy was uneventful.

The three doctors from Boston?s?Harvard Medical School, who reported the case study online in this week?s?Archives of Neurology, claim this is the first instance they know of where an aberrant text message was used to help diagnose a stroke. In their report, they refer to the woman?s inability to text properly as ?dystextia,? a word coined by medical experts in an earlier case.

Dystextia appears to be a new form of aphasia, a term that refers to any trouble processing language, be it spoken or written. The authors of the Archives paper said that at least theoretically, incoherent text messages will be used more often to flag strokes and other neurological abnormalities that lead to the condition.

?As the accessibility of electronic communication continues to advance, the growing digital record will likely become an increasingly important means of identifying?neurologic?disease, particularly in patient populations that rely more heavily on written rather than spoken communication,? they wrote.

Even though jumbled texts are so common, Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is the director of the stroke center at Duke University, said he also believes it?s possible they can be used to sound the alarm on a person?s neurological state, especially in a case like this where the text consisted of complete words that amounted to nonsense rather than the usual autocorrected muddle.

?It would have been very easy to dismiss because of the normal problems with texting but this was a whole conversation that?wasn?t?making sense,? Goldstein said. ?I might be concerned about a patient based on a text like this if they were telling me they?hadn?t?intended to send a disjointed jumble but they?weren?t?able to correct themselves.?

In diagnosing stroke, Goldstein said both patients and medical professionals tend to discount aphasic symptoms, even in speech, but they can often be the first clue something is up. In this woman?s case, other signs were there. Her obstetrician realized in retrospect that she?d had trouble filling out a form earlier in the day. She had difficulties speaking too which might also have been picked up sooner if a recent upper respiratory infection?hadn?t?reduced her voice to a whisper.

But unlike this woman, most people leave their autocorrect turned on. If we relied solely on maddeningly unintelligible text messages to determine neurological state, neurologists might have lines out the door.

Google vs. Microsoft: Santa-tracking systems go out of sync

12 hrs.

Not even Santa Claus can avoid getting drawn into the tech clash between Google and Microsoft: The two companies have set up separate online systems to track where the Jolly Old Elf has been on Christmas Eve?? but they show him simultaneously at widely separated locations, delivering presents at a dramatically different rate.

On the official "NORAD Tracks Santa" website, powered this year by Microsoft, Santa Claus was in Rome, well past the 3-billion-present mark in his holiday rounds. At the same time, Google's Santa Tracker showed him buzzing through Agadez in the African country of Niger, not quite up to the 1-billion-present mark.

They can't both be right. Can they? Here's the word from Search?Engine?Land's Danny Sullivan, who has been tracking the discrepancy in this year's?Santa-tracking software:

"NORAD explains that it uses everything from radar to jets to track Santa. Google doesn?t explain its technology, but I suspect it tries to triangulate Santa using his cell phone signal or use of wifi hotspots.

"As for why NORAD shows Father Christmas delivering three?times the number of gifts that Google is listing, perhaps NORAD?s radars can better pinpoint presents while Google might be doing estimating.?Meanwhile? both services sometimes show presents being delivered over oceans! And why is NORAD showing Santa arriving in some places at 9pm rather than midnight, as has been the case in the past?"

Maybe this is just the sort of thing that happens when you switch software: NORAD (also known as the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been monitoring Santa's flight as a public service since 1955, and five years ago, it teamed up with Google to keep up with the crush of Web traffic. This year, however, the NORAD Santa operation parted ways with Google and partnered with Microsoft instead.

Google stayed in the Santa game by setting up its own tracking system for "Santa's Dashboard" and Google Maps?? a system that doesn't make use of NORAD's tracking data.

Today, Canadian Maj. Gen. Andre Viens, a spokesman for NORAD, declined to intervene in the Santa-tracking war.

"It's not affecting our tracking," Viens told MSNBC. "We're not in competition with anyone. Our role, and we've been doing that for more than?50 years, is to track Santa and make sure that he has a safe and secure journey throughout the world, and throughout North America in particular."

TODAY:?Follow Santa's Christmas Eve flight

PhotoBlog: Inside NORAD's command center

Maybe it shouldn't be surprising to find?that it's so difficult to get a firm fix on Santa's position, considering how many presents he has to deliver in so little time. Some experts have speculated that the only way Santa could ?deliver gifts (or lumps of coal) to billions of homes in the course of just a few hours would be if he somehow harnessed quantum teleportation. And once you accept that, it's not that big of a leap to detect Santa in two places at once.

Alan Boyle is the science editor for NBC News Digital, and has been tracking NORAD's Santa tracker since 1998.?Boyle's usual online?hangout is over at Cosmic Log.

Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N5100 possibly seen testing, may put quad Exynos in a small tablet

Samsung Galaxy Note GTN5100 possibly caught testing, may bring quad Exynos to small tablets

Feeling that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 could use some more grunt? There's a chance you'll get your wish. An unannounced Galaxy Note GT-N5100 has popped up in benchmark scores with what looks to be a 1.6GHz Exynos 4412, better known as the Exynos 4 Quad variant that's used in the speedy Galaxy Note II. We don't know that it's a small tablet, but the 1,280 x 800 resolution matches that of the Galaxy Note 10.1 -- it's not very likely that Samsung wants to duplicate its recent design efforts. Whatever the dimensions, the testing shows that the slate is using Android 4.1.2, and it may be a cellular-equipped model with that "kona3g" codename. If the GT-N5100 is more than just a set of benchmarks, the real question may be when we'll see it; there's no guarantee of a tinier Galaxy Note in Las Vegas.

Invasion of the Pods | Psychology Today

Two days before Thanksgiving the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released a Safety Alert pithily titled ?Single-Load Liquid Laundry Packets: Harmful to Children." Well, maybe not so pithy. This relatively new-on-the-U.S.-market product is better known as ?detergent pods.?

?Single-load liquid packet? sounds like some kind of weapon. Then again, that inference might not be misdirected. Of course, it could be argued that pods conjures up the image of a sinister alien species, which also has a ring of truth given that laundry pods come to us after already having invaded the U.K. More on that experience later.

Ironically, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) seems to have come up with its convoluted pod-free phraseology bending over backwards to avoid any reference to one of the main products out there on supermarket shelves. Here?s a slogan that gives a hint: Tide?s reinventing the way you do laundry!

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) was not so circumspect in titling the lead Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report article for its October 19 issue: ?Health Hazards Associated with Laundry Detergent Pods ? United States, May-June 2012? (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6141a1.htm). Limiting itself two just two months of data and only two regional Poison Control Centers, the CDC detailed four cases of severe illness in very young children (aged 10, 15, 17, and 20 months) who had ingested or bitten into pods containing concentrated detergent. All were hospitalized; three of the four required intubation. In addition to gut irritation, vomiting, and respiratory tract compromise, another notable complication (and an uncommon one for detergents) was central nervous system toxicity. The CDC delved deeper into Poison Control Center data nationally, finding that over a one month period from mid-May to mid-June, 485 pod detergent exposures had been reported. Even before the CDC report, the Consumers Union had written to CPSC calling for action on this problem (http://www.consumersunion.org/pub/core_product_safety/018481.html).

It was nearly two months before the CPSC responded with its November 20th Safety Alert (http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/390.pdf) . The one page flyer is seasonably colored red and green (the latter coming from a small green pod picture in the upper right; a larger pod illustration is almost completely obscured by a large print balloon summarizing the CPSC?s take-home message). The CPSC cogently highlights why toddlers might get in trouble with pods: ?Liquid laundry packets are attractive to children as play items because they are soft and colorful and they resemble familiar items like candy, toys, and teething products.? The alert contains no mandate for any change to product packaging (nor, heaven forbid, any recall threat) and does not even a suggest relabeling, however modest. Rather, the CPSC instructs, ?Do NOT let Children Handle; Keep Locked Up & Out of a Child?s Sight and Reach.? If single-load detergents can be a weapon, then this is the equivalent of arguing for armed guards as the solution to the problem.

Six days after it released its alert, the CPSC received a consumer injury report forwarded on from a manufacturer (http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1280239): ?I use Tide Pods to do my laundry. My 3-year-old got a hold of one of the Pods, squeezed it, and it went directly into her eye?.Her eye suffered a severe corneal abrasion. She basically burned off the top layer of her cornea and the Doctor said it was similar to a chemical burn. With some treatment and a weeks worth of pain, she will be fine. However, people should be aware, and the labeling which states "May cause some eye irritation" should be changed to seek medical attention immediately. These pods are fairly new, and even Doctors are not aware of the damage they can cause.?

The CPSC website also includes the official response from the Procter & Gamble Company, which reads in part, ?We?re very sorry about your daughter?s experience and glad to hear she is feeling better. As a company, we?re deeply committed to the health and well being of our consumers. We understand you want safe products to use in your home; we want the same for our families, too. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of those who use our products and we take reports of accidental contacts with household cleaners seriously.? Proctor and Gamble goes on to delineate a few changes it will make, including changing the latch on the pods dispenser from single to double release to require more dexterity to open it (a kind of safety trigger). They end their comments, ?Again, we?re really sorry to hear of your daughter?s experience and we?re appreciative of your efforts to help us gain a better understanding. If we can be of additional assistance, please let us know.? One can learn further about P&G?s concerns by tuning into their 1.12 minute instructional video Clean Routine to learn better that ?A Safe Home is a Happy Home!? (http://www.tide.com/en-US/article/Quick-and-easy-steps-to-a-safe-...)

Arguably, it does take time to make post-marketing adjustments. The particular problem of eye injury should not have come as a surprise, however. As early as 2005, the British Medical Journal published a letter highlighting six cases of eye injury from such products in young children. Nor has the problem gone away. In 2010, a similar report appeared in the Lancet. It?s hard to argue obscurity here ? this is the equivalent of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the New England Journal of Medicine both publicizing the same hazard.

In the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dr. Bennell, re-invented as a public health physician, at one point warns (with a premonitory wink at the audience), ?You don't have any secrets from the Department of Health.? We might all benefit from a little Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style paranoia at the CPSC. Or at least maybe they could just stay awake.

Rihanna reportedly buys home in Pacific Palisades

6 hrs.

Just because it?s around the holidays, doesn?t mean it?s been quiet in celebrity real estate. Rihanna picked up a place in the Pacific Palisades and Ricky Martin bought in Manhattan.

Rihanna buys in Pacific Palisades
Although her last home had leak issues, Rihanna didn?t let it dampen her next real estate move. The Barbados-born singer reportedly bought a new home in Pacific Palisades.

Like her previous digs in Beverly Hills, this place is a brand-new, ultra-modern construction. Sitting on a large private lot off a gated road, the home has 7 bedrooms, 9 baths and extra-large living spaces with 14-foot ceilings. True to most celeb properties, the Pacific Palisades home includes quite a few high-end features: media and game rooms and ?smart home? technology that controls temperature, fireplaces, security and sound.

Outdoor spaces abound in Rihanna?s new place, including a sun deck with fire pit and barbecue, as well as an enormous infinity pool with spa, perfect for lounging around after a late-night gig.

Ricky Martin buys NY condo
Shortly after finally selling his last Florida property, Ricky Martin has made his move to New York concrete with the purchase of a Big Apple condo. The pop singer currently stars in the Broadway production of ?Evita? and has said he wanted to make his move to NYC permanent. According to property records, Martin dropped $5.9 million on the home at the end of November.

The apartment Martin purchased is in the 170 East End Avenue building on the Upper East Side. Completed in 2009 by Peter Marino, the building is across the street from the 15-acre Carl Schurz Park, which has playgrounds and open fields, perfect for Martin?s twin boys.

Martin?s 3,147-square-foot place has 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, 10-foot ceilings and plenty of windows, creating light living spaces. The eat-in kitchen has top-of-the-line appliances, Swiss quartzite countertops and marble floors. Building amenities include a fitness center, squash court, Pilates room, yoga studio, movie theater, library and children?s playroom.

Affectiva's Emotion Recognition Tech: When Machines Know What You're Feeling

Smile: Your computer is watching.

Affectiva, a nearly 2-year-old startup that grew out of MIT?s Media Lab, is teaching machines to understand what you feel.

Affectiva has developed a way for computers to recognize human emotions based on facial cues or physiological responses, and then use that emotion-recognition technology to help brands improve their advertising and marketing messages.

For example, Affectiva might train a webcam on users while they watch ads, tracking their smirks, smiles, frowns and furrows to measure their levels of surprise, amusement or confusion throughout a commercial and compare them to other viewers across different demographics. Affectiva also makes a wearable biosensor that can monitor the user's emotional state via her skin.

For HuffPost Tech's "Life as..." series, Affectiva?s co-founder and chief technology officer Rana El Kaliouby offered a glimpse at what happens when machines know we're amused and the future of computers with a sense for feelings.

Affectiva?s technology allows brands to not only listen in on what we say about what we?re feeling, but to actually see for themselves what we're feeling. Which industries are interested in applying Affectiva?s emotion-recognition technology to their work?

The closest use case is measuring responses to media -- whether you?re watching an advertisement, movie trailer, movie, TV show or online video. If an ad is supposed to be funny, but we look at 100 participants and none laugh, then we know it?s not really effective. The idea is to enable media creators to optimize their content.

Political polling is another big area for us -- measuring people?s responses to a political debate. There are applications in games, in all things social, and in health, too. We can read your heart rate from a webcam without you wearing anything -- we can just use the reflection of your face, which shows blood flow. Imagine having a camera on all the time monitoring your heart rate so that it can tell you if something?s wrong, if you need to get more fit, or if you?re furrowing your brow all the time and you need to relax.

What have you learned about people that you wouldn?t have known without Affectiva?s emotion-recognition technology?

In some cultures, like Middle Eastern, Egyptian or Asian cultures, people are often hesitant to give any negative feedback. There was an ad in India for body lotion, and there was one particular scene where a husband is being playful with his wife, whose tummy is showing, and he touches her tummy. We recorded women watching the video, then asked them whether they liked the ad.

Some didn?t bring up the scene at all, and others said the ad was really offensive -? ?How could you do that?? and so forth. But when we looked at the data, for 100 percent of the women, there was always an ?enjoyment? smile when they watched that scene. They clearly enjoyed it.

I can imagine politicians using Affectiva to tailor their ads to ensure potential voters feel a certain way when they see them -- overjoyed, for example -- and another way when they see their opponent -- say, terrified. How do you envision Affectiva being used in campaigns?

We measured about 100 people?s responses to the third Obama/Romney debate. In the third debate, Obama did especially well, and we found that both Democrats and Republicans responded very positively to Obama. He cracked a number of jokes and people universally found those funny. Imagine if this feedback had been given in real time to the politicians and they?d used it to optimize their messaging. I do see that happening.

affectiva emotion recognition technology

Affectiva's "Emote Your Vote" feature uses the company's Affdex technology to gauge individuals' emotional reactions to Super Bowl ads. In the picture here, the points at which the author smiled during the ad (shown bright turquoise) are contrasted with other viewers' smile activity (graphed below in green, yellow, red and magenta).

You mentioned there might be social applications of the technology. Hypothetically, could Facebook figure out what it should show me to make me feel a certain way -- i.e. that certain people?s profiles make me happy, so I should see their profiles when I?m feeling sad?

It could show you not just happy profiles, but also offer affect-based recommendations for things to do or people to talk to or things to watch. Or games can even adapt to your emotional experience, or your emotional state. There?s definitely a lot of stuff that can be done once you figure out that person?s moods.

If we?re all watching a YouTube video, it would be really cool if you could get a sense for how that YouTube video affected people?s emotional states. Say it makes you happy and you laugh your head off. We?d also know a million other people who saw that video and at that same scene also laughed. It?s very intriguing to be able to take something very human, like an expression of emotion, and share that globally.

Could companies that use Affectiva technology also manipulate our emotions to make us feel a certain way, so we?re more inclined to consume their product? For example, if Facebook knows I spend more time on the site when I?m anxious, might it try to make me anxious by showing me more content that unsettles me?

With every technology there will be misuses of it. At Affectiva, I believe we have a role to educate people about what can and can?t be done with the technology. I don?t think its super easy to manipulate people?s emotions in that way.

Although places like casinos already do try to manipulate our emotions, right? It seems like Affectiva might allow people more granular control, in real-time, to put people into the right frame of mind to shop or spend.

People do that anyhow. If you walk into Best Buy or Target, they spend a lot of effort trying to make this a place where you?d want to spend more time. All this stuff hasn?t yet been optimized for a digital experience. And I think there is an opportunity to do that and do it in a way that respects people?s emotional states.

You noted Affectiva is ?big on opt-in? and believes people should ?always be in control of what they share or do not share.? Still, reading our emotions marks a new level of intimacy with brands online. How does this change our expectation of privacy?

I think at some point somebody is going to do something that?s not opt-in, but so far everyone we?ve worked with, we?ve insisted they do it so that it?s opt-in. And sometimes we?ve pushed back. When we first started Affectiva, some of our early customers said, ?We don?t want to tell people they?re being recorded because either they?ll opt out or it?ll affect their experiences.? We?re always adamant that they tell people up front and people have to sign a consent from.

Does using Affectiva change how people express their emotions?

Early on in our research, we thought having the camera on would make people more aware of it and so they?d be less emotive or artificially more emotive. But we found that very quickly people forgot they had the cameras on. We?ve had people in their bedrooms -- they clearly forget the camera?s on.

Where might we encounter Affectiva?s technology in the future?

Anywhere from laptops to mobile phones. There?s a large percentage of mobile phones that now have a camera that?s with you a lot of the time, and there?s a lot of interest around those cameras as a data collection mechanism. And cars: we?ve done a number of projects with various car manufacturers looking at drowsy driving, distracted driving, and how to measure when people are getting angry, frustrated or bothered. There?s a lot of interest from the car people.

You can also tie emotional response with location. Think of Foursquare, but you don?t know just know where a person is, but how she?s feeling.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Police: US Sen. Crapo arrested, charged with DUI

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) ? Idaho U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence in a Washington, D.C., suburb, authorities said.

Police in Alexandria, Va., said Sunday that the Idaho Republican was pulled over after his vehicle ran a red light. Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said Crapo failed field sobriety tests and was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. without incident. He was transported to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m..

"There was no refusal (to take sobriety tests), no accident, no injuries," Donaldson said. "Just a traffic stop that resulted in a DUI."

Donaldson said he didn't immediately know what Crapo's blood alcohol level was, where he was coming from or the type of vehicle he was driving.

Crapo (KRAY'-poh) has a Jan. 4 court date.

Messages left for a Crapo spokesman weren't immediately returned Sunday night.

Currently in his third term, Crapo has been in the Senate since 1998, and served for six years in the U.S. House of Representatives before that. He was easily re-elected in 2010, and won't have to run again until 2016.

In Congress, Crapo has built a reputation as a staunch social and fiscal conservative. It has been expected he would take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee. He also serves on the Senate's budget and finance panels. Crapo was a member of the so-called "Gang of Six" senators that worked in 2011 toward a deficit-reduction deal that was never adopted by Congress.

A Mormon from Idaho Falls, Idaho, Crapo has five children with his wife, Susan, and three grandchildren.

Plight of teen prompts education debate, protest in China

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - As the end of middle school approached this year, Zhan Haite, 15, faced two choices: attend vocational school in Shanghai in the fall or move to her ancestral home in distant Jiangxi province to take the high school entrance exam and study there.

Taking the test and going to senior high school in cosmopolitan Shanghai, where she had lived since she was four, was not an option.

Zhan is one of millions of children whose parents belong to China's vast migrant workforce and are barred from taking senior high school or college entrance exams where they live by half-century-old policies on household registration, or hukou.

The hukou system has split China's population in two for decades, affording different privileges and opportunities to urban and rural residents. It is a major challenge for China's new economic policymakers under Premier-in-waiting Li Keqiang as they try to push urbanization as an engine of growth.

Not content with her choices, Zhan launched a microblog in May where she argued her case online, igniting a heated national debate.

In the process, she has become the poster child for a loose-knit but growing campaign for equal education opportunities.

"She is, of course, very important because she is a victim, and all along we have been hoping one of the children who have been hurt by these policies would stand up and represent all the victims so that the community more broadly can pay attention to the issue," said Xu Zhiyong, a Beijing civil rights lawyer, who has campaigned for people like Zhan.

Zhan, who has been home schooling since May, seems comfortable in the role.

"I am representative of students like me, our needs, our hopes," she said in her the two-bedroom apartment where she lives with her parents, grandmother, brother and sister.

"People should be able to take the tests where they study. There is no need to debate this."

    SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS

But there has been debate, and people have taken to the streets. Beijing police on Saturday broke up a small protest and detained some of the demonstrators calling for hukou reform.

"We are doing this for the right of our children to an education," one of the protesters, who gave his family name as Tie, told Reuters on a freezing street.

"We want them to get rid of these restricting rules on household registration and give equal rights to education. We will keep fighting for it," he added.

For as long as there have been migrants after market reforms started more than three decades ago there have been complaints about the hukou system's inadequacies. Discussion of hukou reform has circulated for years, but steps have been cautious.

China's 230 million migrant workers have been the oarsmen of the world's second-biggest economy but have long been treated as second-class citizens with unequal access to education, health and other services tied to official residence status.

The education issue has been particularly divisive.

Zhan's father, Zhan Quanxi, was detained for several days this month after publicly protesting for education rights in central Shanghai, but criminal charges were dropped.

Still, his online posts have been met with sharp criticism from Shanghai hukou holders, some of whom have claimed to be part of a "Shanghai Defence Alliance".

The verbal mud slinging reflects a battle over turf in big cities where high school seats can help students get into top universities, said Ralph Litzinger, an anthropology professor at Duke University who studies Chinese migrant issues.

"In an increasingly stratified and almost insanely competitive society, of which the rural-urban hukou system is one part, Zhan Haite's case is ultimately, in my view, about uncertain and unpredictable Chinese futures," he said.

OK: Government revenue grows, but big tax cut unlikely ? Watchdog ...

By Patrick B. McGuigan | Oklahoma Watchdog

OKLAHOMA CITY ??The vibrant Oklahoma economy?s impressive expansion, with the state in the top three for per capita personal income growth?during the past?few years, is bringing a lot more money into state tax coffers.

GOV> MART FALLIN has not made several significant decisions about the Executive Budget she will submit to the Legislature in February.

However, taxpayers probably should not count on significant tax relief any time soon.

The Legislature will have about $214.6 million more to spend for fiscal year 2014 than in FY 2013, yet state officials don?t seem prepared to make a fresh push for a major personal income tax reduction.

Finance Secretary Preston Doerflinger said Gov. Mary Fallin has not made several significant decisions about the Executive Budget she will submit to the Legislature in February.

However, Doerflinger said Fallin likely would support a $50-million increase in funding for the Department of Human Services, as projected in the Pinnacle Plan released last summer. The plan reflects an accord Fallin and other officials signed, which flowed from lengthy controversy and litigation.

Additionally, Fallin supports implementing historic judicial reform legislation. While that is intended to save money during the next five to 10, in the near-term the state Corrections Department wants money for salary hikes and to cover implementation costs for that ?reinvestment? initiative.

Corrections is not alone. State agencies have requested increased spending totaling $1.4 billion, far surpassing the revenue growth, Doerfllinger said.

Hanging over the state government?s financial planning is the so-called ?fiscal cliff? at the federal level, with broad implications for state governance. In response to a question, Doerflinger said that his hunch now ? 10 days before the end of the calendar year ? is that the nation will ?go over the cliff, sort of.?

Doerflinger said he anticipates federal negotiations will continue through the end of the year, with some accord emerging only after the eleventh hour.

Doerflinger said the state Finance staff is basing its projections on tax increases and federal sequestration that will, if not changed, occur beginning Jan. 1.

In Oklahoma, despite the spending pressures from agencies, Doerflinger said there likely will be a tax reduction proposal from the Fallin administration, but ?not as detailed or broad? as what was put on the table last year. He declined to indicate a percentage or fraction for possible reductions in personal income taxes.

This months projection?s led state finance officials to anticipate a deposit into the Constitutional Reserve, popularly known as the Rainy Day Fund, of $66.4 million, which now has a $577.5 million balance.

The expected deposit will build the fund past $600 million for the first time in history. That fund is capped at 15 percent of the prior year?s general fund collections, meaning that additional revenue growth might take the reserve to $834.7 million.

When Fallin took office in January 2011, the Rainy Day Fund had 3 cents on the ledger. Doerflinger said officials have projected revenue bumps flowing into the General Revenue Fund:

    • Personal income tax collections leaping ahead $121.1 million, or 6.1 percent over the estimate a year ago
    • Corporate income taxes rising $164.6 million, or 51.3 percent
    • Sales taxes increasing $126.6 million, or 6.6 percent
    • Interest and investment estimates up $3 million, or 3.6 percent.

On the flip side, revenue from gross production taxes on oil and gas decreased. For natural gas, the decline is $41 million (21.8 percent); for oil the decline was $799.8 million or 21.8 percent.

Oklahoma Finance Secretary Preston Doerflinger told the state Board of Equalization the state will have a lot more money to spend this coming year.

The State Board of Equalization on Thursday certified $7 billion for expenditure next year, reflecting growth in tax revenues in line with the healthy state economy.? Doerflinger said the coming fiscal year will be the first since the beginning of the Great Recession in 2008 where revenue available for expenditure exceeds $7 billion.

That total comes from certified funds anticipated at $6 billion, with $5.7 billion available for appropriation, and another $1 billion ?in other income streams.

Thursday?s revenue certification actually understates significantly the total state budget. Jill Geiger, state budget director in Doerflinger?s office, told CapitolBeat that as of Wednesday, ?The total budget for all funds (state appropriated, federal, agency special accounts, etc) is $24,399,489,307.?

After the constitutional board?s formal certification of anticipated revenue, state Senate President Pro Temp Brian Bingman, a Sapulpa Republican, said national uncertainty ?will continue to adversely impact the states. We must plan accordingly, and while celebrating positive indicators of growth, remain cautious and forward-thinking.?

We Can Often Tell What Tattoos Mean, But What Do Body Piercings ...

As a society, are we too quick to judge people who have body piercings and tattoos. Although I don?t have any personally, and no one in my immediate family seems to, that I know about, it does appear that there is a negative stigma, that shouldn?t really exist. I have a few reasons for believing this, one is I think it is human nature, as we?ve noted with tribal people, and many of our ancestors. Secondly, individuality should be garnered as a positive in our society, not a negative. Okay so let?s talk.

Something has come to my attention recently which is somewhat bothersome, it appears that the FBI wants to figure out what tattoos mean about a person?s personality, and what type of tattoos are certain people with certain personalities more likely to get. That seems problematic to me. No, I am not for Iris scans, fingerprinting the whole world, or all this Facebook recognition technology on the social networks on the Internet either. I know for a fact from reading research papers that the human iris changes over one?s life based on their health condition, their diet, exposure to UV radiation, and all sorts of other things as well.

    ?What does your tattoo say about you? The FBI wants to know,? was the title of an article appearing in NextGov Online News on July 17, 2012 posted by Aliya Sternstein which stated;

?The FBI is working with police tech vendors and local police to interpret the symbolism of tattoos to catch crooks and terrorists. This will be added to Iris and Facial Recognition, they already have fingerprint data. The mass collection of multiple biometric markers, potentially including vocal tracks and handwriting samples, has upset immigrant communities who say the FBI and DHS are misusing the technology to deport innocent people.?

Still, isn?t this stereotyping? It seems us citizens are not allowed to stereotype as that is considered a no-no, political correct, and lord help us if we make an inappropriate comment; can you say hate crime? And yet, the government is instituting profiling and stereotyping of anyone who is different, treating them as if they are the evil joker in a Batman movie. Why are we stereotyping, and what does all this mean. Someone with no tattoos could just as well turn out to be a criminal, as someone who does have tattoos.

Some people might say that those who don?t have tattoos are more integrated into society, and are less likely do a crime, but as soon as we say that, we are attacking a minority that we very much need, that minority believes in individuality, and they are exercising their freedom of expression. That?s a good thing, that?s what the US stands for, and we need more people who believe that. We do not need a society that looks like the Borg, yuk, where everyone is the same, and no one dares to step out of line, or wear a bright color unless it is Friday. You see my point? Please consider all this and think on it.

After NORAD jumps on the Windows 8 sleigh with Microsoft, Google launches its own Santa Tracker

NORAD has been using Google Maps since 2007, but earlier in December, it ditched Google for Bing Maps to track the man in red this year. On Wednesday, Google announced its own Santa Tracker anyway, which you?ll be able to use to follow the big buy on Google Maps and Google Earth starting at 2:00AM PST on Christmas Eve over at Google.com/SantaTracker.

The fact Microsoft managed to sway the NORAD Tracks Santa project to its side hasn?t deterred Google. The company says it has put together a team of dedicated Google Maps engineers to build a ?new route algorithm? for tracking Santa?s journey around the world on Christmas Eve.

Here?s how it will look when it?s working next week:

    Here?s how it currently looks:

The countdown site is full of Christmas surprises for the kids and anyone else who enjoys keeping a tab on Saint Nick. The company claims you can even ask Santa to call a friend or family member.

If you were wondering, it?s powered by Gmail (sample message):

sendacallfromsanta 730x465 After NORAD jumps on the Windows 8 sleigh with Microsoft, Google launches its own Santa Tracker

Google naturally sees this as an opportunity to get into the spirit of the holidays:

On Christmas Eve we?ll be proudly showcasing a preview of Santa?s dashboard ? the technology that powers his sleigh during his around-the-world journey. We?ve received this special preview from one of Santa?s many developer elves, who are hard at work in the North Pole helping Santa prepare for his big day. Santa?s dashboard ? featuring the latest and greatest in Google Maps technology and sleigh engineering ? will allow you to follow his progress around the world, and also learn a little about some of his stops along the way.

All that technology means Google has been able to build a few more tools to help you track Santa from wherever you are: a Chrome extension and an Android app. You?ll also be able to get updates from Google Maps on Google+, Facebook, and Twitter,of course.

Here?s the Chrome extension in action:

OcQQ9 730x354 After NORAD jumps on the Windows 8 sleigh with Microsoft, Google launches its own Santa Tracker

It looks to us like the Microsoft-Google war has now even expanded to Santa. On the one hand there is NORAD with official apps for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and even Windows 8. On the other there is Google with its own site, Chrome extension, and Android app. It?s almost too much, but the kids will undoubtedly love it all.

Gary Andersen interviews for Wisconsin football coaching job, according to report

Utah State Aggies coach Gary Andersen has reportedly interviewed for Wisconsin's now-vacant head coaching position.

Following an 11-2 season in which his Aggies reigned victorious in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Utah State head coach Gary Andersen immediately interviewed for the vacant Wisconsin coaching gig, according to a report by Pete Thamel of SI.com.

The 58-year-old Andersen is one of three men to have already concluded interviews for the job alongside Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Mel Tucker and Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson. And with Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez eager to announce a brand new coach in order to eliminate the uncertainty surrounding his football program, Andersen represents an intriguing option for the school with such a short timetable expected before an announcement.

For Utah State though, this news clearly has to come as a bit of a shock. The school pulled out its wallet to lock up Andersen and his staff through the 2018 season less than three weeks ago, and is now forced to deal with the very real possibility of losing the same coach they just signed to a long-term deal. Tucker remains the most likely candidate of the three however, but it's quite evident that Andersen is more than willing to bolt Utah State if Alvarez comes calling.

UPDATE: Contact between Andersen and Wisconsin was only preliminary, and the school is set to move on with its coaching search without the Utah State coach, according to Football Scoop.

Poor customer service can result in extreme and negative responses from disgruntled customers, who may walk away from your business.
    ?
During a crisis, customer services should:
? be fully aware of the nature of the crisis.
? be able to respond to the crisis.
    ? be detail oriented.
? quickly deliver relevant information to all stakeholders.
? be able to check up on how people are reacting to information that is being given
    ? ensure follow ups.
    ?
When it comes to your customer service strategy, remember the following factors:
    ?
? Be proactive: Don?t be reactive and wait for the customer to reach out to you first. Proactively get in touch with your clients or customers. During tough situations, it is always better a customer hears any negative news directly from you, rather than through other sources. This way you can also be sure that accurate information is passed on. Always acknowledge any mistakes on your end first.
    ?
? Listen carefully: Listen carefully, understand the exact concerns that are being put forth and respond accordingly.
    ?
? Keep promises you make: Reliability is one of the main aspects of customer service. Crises test assurances and promises made.
    ?
? Help without expectations: When a customer has been well serviced, he will notice that the one who has serviced him might not have much to gain from it. Customers tend to remember such incidents, which will prove beneficial for your small business in the long run.
    ?
? Practice your Ps and Qs: Times of crisis, brings out different sides to people?s personalities. No matter how irate a customer gets, make sure you keep your cool and are courteous at all times. Being kind and well-mannered not only helps get through the crisis faster but brings in accolades.
    ?
? Use social media sites: Today more or less everyone is easily accessible on social media. Leverage sites like Facebook and Twitter to help in reaching out to a large audience immediately. Posting information during the crisis and replying to customer queries online is a fast and effective customer service approach.
    ?
? Empathise: It is in the times of crisis when a customer would need reassurance and comfort, but make sure you do not come across as sympathetic, as it may offend the customer. Be professional and empathize instead. A customer would well remember and appreciate if at a weak moment he is serviced with reassurance and genuine concern.
    ?
? Maintain an updated database: Keep a record of customer contact information so that they can be accessed easily. A crisis is never planned and hits you when you might least expect it. If a database is easily available, a lot of time is saved and customer service is much more efficient.
    ?
? Follow up: Follow ups should be done post a crisis. This serves as feedback for the company as pointers and suggestion could help them improve and be prepared if another crisis were to break out.
    ?
While customer service may look like a simple job, it involves a lot of patience and is a continuous process. Customer services, especially in times of crisis can make all the difference to you small business.
